Veronica hulkeana
Previously classified as Hebe hulkeana, this distinctive species has now been reclassified as Veronica hulkeana. Despite the name change, it remains a standout evergreen shrub, valued for its arching sprays of lilac to pale pink flowers, which appear in abundance from late spring into early summer. These delicate, airy blooms contrast beautifully against its small, glossy green leaves, creating a light and elegant effect in the garden.
Native to New Zealand’s South Island, where it grows naturally on rocky cliffs and alpine outcrops, hulkeana is well-adapted to free-draining soils and cool, temperate conditions. It thrives in full sun to partial shade, making it well-suited to sheltered borders, rock gardens, and gravel plantings. Unlike many other Veronica species, it has a more open, trailing habit, giving it a softer, more informal look.
This slow-growing but hardy shrub provides year-round structure, with its evergreen foliage offering interest even when not in bloom. Light pruning after flowering encourages bushy growth and a more compact shape.
